The Windows registry is a database repository of information about a computer's configuration.  It’s like a giant  book of references used by the computer to keep track of all of the various components and software inside your computer. Whenever you install or delete a program you add or remove a reference.    So, by installing and uninstalling software a lot, or downloading web pages as you use the Internet (your PC automatically makes a local copy) your registry becomes a mess and gets bigger and bigger, leading in time to decreased PC performance and causing computer crashes.

The problem of a corrupt registry is common with most Windows PC computer users. The registry gets clogged up with the unused data and files from normal daily use, many of which are actually no longer required. These unwanted files and data entries stored in the registry actually corrupt it. A corrupt registry can have serious consequences on the system leading to the reduced speed or even crashing. When the registry file becomes very large, your computer's performance will be decayed and unstable.

A Registry full of errors not only lowers the working speed of your computer, it even affects the speed of the boot process because it takes too processor power to try to figure out the missing entries.  This leads eventually to hazardous actions that brings your system close to crashes.

So, by keeping the registry clean and organised you have less chance of system failure and you will improve the performance of your PC.
